Notes for Stanley Guy "Stan" BRYAN

Stanley "Stan" Guy Bryan was the second born child to James Colin Bryan and  Wilhelmina "Minnie" Hilda Lieske .  He had one full brother, six half-brothers and one half-sister on his arrival.

It is told that "Stan could talk his way into or out of anything." His expertise in telling tall tales with a straight face often irritated, angered and amused his family and friends. I  t was on January 3, 1917 that Stan told one of his tall tales to an enlistment officer for the Canadian Armed Services saying he was 19 years one month old, when in actuality he was only 15 years one month old. They believed him.  It was not until Stan was in uniform and in England during World War I that they found out the truth and shipped him back home.  We are sure the reason for the satisfied grin in the portrait (above) was because this picture in uniform was going to be proof to the fellows back home that he made it.

In a letter dated 1919 from his father to his half-brother, Bill (or "Willie" as he was called in the letter, James Colin Bryan writes, "Well Stanley didn't get as far as he intended.  he was away 4 weeks and didnot write, but walked in 2 weeks ago today.  his mother found him in the Pantry looking for some thing to eat.  he looked like he needed it to.  he took all his money with [him and] didn't bring any back.  he ante doing any thing now only walking around.  there is lots of work and big Pay.  he is haveing a good time"

Stan married Margaret "Maggie" Crawford. She died in 1973.   During genealogy studies it was discovered that Maggie and Stan were already relatives.  She is the granddaughter of Edward O'Brien and Stan is the nephew of Edward O'Brien - Edward being the oldest son of Hugh O'Brien; and James Colin Bryan being one of Hugh O'Brien's youngest children from another marriage.  When questioned in 2003, Stan's youngest brother and sister,  Les and Ada  were not aware of the relation.  It is not known if Stan and Margaret knew.

Stan and Maggie did not have children.
